Honoring Black History Month

February 7, 2020

Since Black History Month was created in 1976, millions of Americans have taken time to honor the countless contributions and achievements African Americans have made both in our nation and around the world. This February, we reaffirm our commitment to the historic and ongoing struggles for justice and equality for all.

In addition to civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr, we also highlight and pay tribute to the legacies of historical figures like Claudette Colvin, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, and Thurgood Marshall just to name a few. We also honor the many people whose names we don’t know, who fought in wars, created businesses, led communities and more in order to build a stronger more united nation.

Throughout history, African Americans have played influential roles in the fields of politics, foreign affairs, technology and civil rights while standing in the face of prejudice and oppressive racial discrimination. We honor their tremendous sacrifice and encourage you to take the opportunity this month to learn more about the prominent and courageous African American leaders and trailblazers that have forever changed our country.

We must never forget that Black History is American History. The achievements of African Americans have contributed to our nation’s greatness.” — Yvette Clarke
