ATTORNEY/REPRESENTATION QUESTIONS

I need an attorney. Can the Attorney General’s Office represent me?
The Attorney General’s Office acts as legal counsel for the state and its agencies and cannot offer legal advice to individuals. If you need help with a personal legal matter, you may want to contact a private attorney. The Lawyer Referral Referral Directory at the Utah State Bar can assist you in contacting an attorney here.

Can the Attorney General’s Office refer me to an attorney?
No. However, the Utah State Bar maintains a directory of attorneys on their website here.

I need legal help, but I can’t afford to pay a lawyer. What are my options?
If you meet specific qualifications, you may be able to get a good lawyer at a discount. You can learn about the Utah State Bar’s Modest Means Program here. The Utah State Bar also offers a program in which lawyers give free half-hour consultations. Find more information here: https://www.utahbar.org/volunteer/tuesday-night-bar/. Additionally, Utah Legal Services officers help in non-criminal cases to those who qualify.

COMPLAINTS/QUESTIONS ABOUT AGENCIES

I have a complaint against an attorney. Where do I report them?
If the attorney is an Assistant Attorney General in our office, please fill out a complaint form here and sent it to uag@agutah.gov. If the attorney is not in our office, you may report them to the Utah State Bar here.

I have a complaint against a business. Where can I get help?
Utah’s Consumer Protection Division is a separate entity from the Utah Attorney General’s Office. They will be able to get you the help you need. You may contact the division at consumerprotection@utah.gov or 801-530-6601.

I have a question about or complaint against a police officer or police department. What do I do?
Our office has no jurisdiction over police officers or police departments. However, police officers must answer to the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). You may contact POST at 801-256-2300.

I have a question about or a complaint against a judge or the courts. What do I do?
Our office has no jurisdiction over the courts. Contact the Court Administrator at 801-578-3897 or the Judicial Conduct Commission at 801-626-3369.

I have a complaint against DCFS (Utah Division of Child & Family Services). What can I do?
Our office provides legal representation for DCFS, so we are prohibited by law from representing you in your complaint against DCFS. However, if you feel you have a need, you may contact a private attorney. You may find a private attorney here.

QUESTIONS ABOUT FRAUD

I believe a business is engaging in fraud. Where can I get help?
Contact Utah’s Department of Commerce. They will be able to direct you to get the help you need. You may contact the department at commerce@utah.gov or 801-530-6701.

My identity and/or personal information has been stolen. What should I do?
Please contact the FTC. You can learn more about the steps you need to take here.

I have been receiving scam/fraud phone calls. What can I do?
Both the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission are charged with tracking and gathering information regarding scam phone calls. Please file a report with one of these agencies. You may contact the Federal Communications Commission at 888-225-5322 or www.fcc.gov or the Federal Trade Commission at 877-382-4357 or www.ftc.gov. QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE

What are the duties of the Attorney General?
The Utah Attorney General acts as the legal advisor of State officers and agencies. The Office also prosecutes corporations which act illegally and investigates and prosecutes select complaints. The Office also administers programs, such as the Children’s Justice Center and the White Collar Crime Offender Registry, to provide help to citizens of the State of Utah. What are some agencies the Attorney General’s Office does NOT have jurisdiction over?
Our Office does not have jurisdiction over the following. Please see the contact information on each:

  • Police Officers. Please contact Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) at 801-256-2300
  • Courts. Contact the Court Administrator at 801-578-3897 or the Judicial Conduct Commission at 801-626-3369.
  • DCFS. Our attorneys are often appointed Guardian ad litem for children involved in DCFS issues, but our office does not have any control over DCFS itself. Please contact the Division of Child & Family Services at 801-538-4100.

How do I get a meeting with someone from your office?
Our office does not give legal advice, nor does it represent private citizens. However, if you feel like you have a legitimate concern to speak about with someone in our office, please contact us. Keep in mind that the Attorney General is very busy, and while he himself might not be able to meet with each person who requests it, the rest of our staff is very capable and may be able to get you the help you need.

QUESTIONS ABOUT LAWS

I want to look up a state law. Where can I find it?
You can access the Utah Code and Constitution online via the Utah State Legislature here. Additionally, you can look at bills in the Utah State Legislature here.

How do I suggest new laws?
Our office does not make or change laws. Please contact your state legislators. You may find out which lawmakers represent you here.

Who represents me?
Attorneys in our office do not represent any citizens. To find out which State Senator and Representative represent you, please type in your address here.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

I have a question about child support. Who can I talk to?
Please contact the Division of Child & Family Services at 801-538-4100.

I received a bill from the University of Utah and it has your office’s name on it. Who should I contact?
Please contact University Health Care Patient Billing and Financial Services at 801-587-6304.

I have questions about disability. Who can I contact?
You may call the Disability Law Center at 801-363-1347 or visit their website here.

I have questions about immigration. Who can I contact?
Immigration is a federal issue, not a state issue. As such, our office has no jurisdiction over it. Please contact an immigration attorney.

I have questions about divorce. Who do I contact?
Please contact a private attorney. You may find an attorney here.

I’m a landlord having issues with my tenants. What can I do?
Utah Courts host a landlord-tenant mediation program. You can learn more about this program here. If you live in Salt Lake or Tooele Counties, the Salt Lake Community Action Program may have resources for you here. If the residence is a HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) property, this is a federal issue, and you should contact the HUD Utah Field Office. If none of these resources answer your question, please contact Utah Legal Services.

I’m a tenant having issues with my landlord. What can I do?
Utah Courts host a landlord-tenant mediation program. You can learn more about this program here. If you live in Salt Lake or Tooele Counties, the Salt Lake Community Action Program may have resources for you here. If the residence is a HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) property, this is a federal issue, and you should contact the HUD Utah Field Office. I have a question about service animals. Who can I contact?
The Utah Labor Commission has compiled a list of questions and answers about service animals that can be found at here under “Can I have an Assistance Animal?”. If you need more advice, please contact a legal attorney.
