SALT LAKE CITY April 18, 2016 — Utah Attorney General’s Office has concluded its investigation of Senator Todd Weiler. The following information was included in a letter to the complainant:
“The Attorney General’s Investigation Division initiated an investigation based on your allegation. Upon completion of the thorough investigation, the matter was presented to the Attorney General’s Office Justice Division to consider prosecution. The applicable standard for a prosecutor to apply to the evidence gathered in an investigation is whether there is a reasonable likelihood of conviction at trial.
“A select panel of experienced Justice Division prosecutors independently assessed the investigators’ case, including investigative reports, documents, and witness interviews. After each prosecutor on the panel had the opportunity to review the investigation, each agreed independently and collaboratively this case lacks a reasonable likelihood of conviction. For this reason, the Utah Attorney General’s Office is declining to prosecute.”
